Lilac Cottage

This is another project from my time at GRT Architecture in Wirksworth. I had the privilege of designing a two-storey extension for a charming stone cottage nestled into a steep slope in Matlock.

The project presented an exciting challenge - to create a modern addition that complemented the historic character of the original structure while making the most of its dramatic setting.

The subtly modern extension, in matching stone, is carefully separated from the existing cottage by a two-storey glazed link structure. This not only provides a clear distinction between old and new but also helps preserve the character of the original building.

At ground floor level, a striking corner glazed opening offers uninterrupted views across the owner’s extensive terraced gardens and an ever-changing canvas of seasonal beauty in the valley beyond.

The existing cottage has also undergone a comprehensive overhaul to ensure it is watertight, safeguarding it for years to come. Great care has been taken to retain as many original features as possible, preserving the charm and history of the property.

This balance of restoration and innovation aims to create a home that is both functional for modern living and respectful of its heritage.
